Crowns & Bridges

Crowns & Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are both restorative treatments used to restore teeth that have suffered from severe decay, gum disease, chips, fractures, and injury/trauma, as well as minor aesthetic problems such as discoloration.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are “caps” that restorean affected tooth from the gum line up. Dental crowns serve a number of restorative purposes, including:

  • Protects a weakened tooth from breaking
  • Restores fractured or chipped teeth
  • Supports larger fillings
  • Anchors dental bridges in place
  • Serves as a prosthetic tooth with dental implants
  • Covers and protects teeth that receive root canal treatment

Dental crowns also have a number of cosmetic purposes, such as improving the appearance of discolored and badly shaped teeth.

Dental Bridges

Bridges are commonly used in dentistry to replace missing permanent teeth as a result of severe decay, disease, or injury. They essentially “bridge” the gap with an artificial tooth or teeth, and are held in place with dental crowns on adjacent sides of the gap. Dental bridges have the ability to restore teeth back to normal function, improving the quality of chewing and speaking. Bridges also help maintain the natural facial structure, preventing sagging from occurring.

Creating Crowns and Bridges

For both dental crowns and bridges, Dr. Espili will examine your current smile to determine which restorative treatment is best for you. A mold is taken of your teeth, and a customized crown/bridge is created in a dental laboratory using this mold. This is so your final crown/bridge fits comfortably and serves its purpose properly. In the meantime, Dr. Espili may provide you with a temporary crown/bridge while the permanent one is being made.
